How to Look After Your Roof

Updated: Oct 10

Your roof is more than just a beautiful aspect of your home, even if you don't realize it. Rather than allowing your roof to age and decay on its own, you should invest some time in roof maintenance and inspection to ensure there is no damage. Whether you employ a professional roofing contractor or do your own roof maintenance in Wisconsin, follow these replacement recommendations to keep your roof in good shape.

#1 Debris Removal

Remove leaves, pine needles, and other dangerous items that can clog gutters and trap water, posing a serious threat to the structure. Debris not only collects a lot of water but also wreaks havoc inside walls and beneath shingles. To avoid any damage to your roof replacement, make it a routine to clear out your gutters at least twice a year.

#2 Examining Flashing

Any fractures or holes in the flashing should be sealed before they cause serious harm. Remove all old caulk and replace it with new waterproof caulk, making sure the flashing is pointing in the appropriate direction. Finally, ensure sure there are no cracks in the sealant since this could allow water to seep into the structure.

#3 Shingles should be replaced

Ensure that your roof is in good shape by nailing down any loose or damaged shingles, nailing down the edges of any gaps larger than a dime, and inspecting the roof for holes.

#4 Trim the Branches

Tree branches that touch or dangle over your roof should be pruned. If a branch comes into contact with your roof, it might cause damage by rubbing against it or falling during a storm. Overhanging branches can prevent sunlight from reaching the roof, making heating and cooling the structure below more difficult. Most

crucially, branches touching or hanging over your roof allow squirrels and other climbing animals to identify dwellings or businesses that appeal to them — and build nests that compromise insulation and provide a fire hazard.

#5 Damage Control Following a Storm

When your roof is damaged by a storm, the results can be terrible for your home. Please contact our team at BRH Enterprises as soon as you spot any damage so that we can check it and provide you with an estimate as part of our roof maintenance in Wisconsin.
