What Is Roof Decking

Roof decking is the material that forms the surface of a roof. It is typically made of wood, plywood, or oriented strand board (OSB). The roof decking is installed on top of the roof framing and under the roofing material. It provides a structural surface for the roof and helps distribute the weight of the roofing material and any snow or other loads that may be placed on the roof. Roof decking also helps to keep the roof dry by providing a barrier between the roofing material and the underlying structure.

There are several types of roof decking materials, including wood, plywood, and oriented strand board (OSB).

1. Wood: Wood roof decking is made of planks or boards that are installed on top of the roof framing. It is usually made of softwoods, such as pine or fir, and is typically used on residential roofs. Wood roof decking is relatively inexpensive, but it is not as durable as other types of roof decking and may require more maintenance.

2. Plywood: Plywood roof decking is made of thin layers of wood that are laminated together to form a sheet. It is stronger and more durable than wood roof decking and is commonly used on both residential and commercial roofs.

3. Oriented strand board (OSB): OSB roof decking is made of thin strands of wood that are pressed and bound together with a resin to form a strong, stable panel. It is less expensive than plywood and is commonly used on residential and commercial roofs. OSB roof decking is known for its strength and durability, but it is not as resistant to water as plywood.
